More about the area:
Bacalar is the largest city after Chetumal Quintana Roo, located about 40 kilometres (25 mi) north of Chetumal, with a population close to 40,000 people.
Bacalar means “surrounded by reeds”, and is also known as “La Laguna de los siete colores” (The lagoon of the seven colors) this difference of colors is due to the feed from the ocean and underground rivers.
Bacalar was a city of the Maya civilization in Pre-Columbian times. This was the first city in the region which the Spanish Conquistadores succeeded in taking and holding in 1543. In 1545 Gaspar Pacheco established the Spanish town here with the name Salamanca de Bacalar. The region of the southern half of what is now Quintana Roo was governed from Bacalar, answerable to the Captain General of Yucatán in Mérida.
Bacalar is one of the cities with great history like the Fortress de San Felipe which was completed in 1729, for the protection from the pirates attacks and may still be visited today.
Bacalar was named a “Pueblo Mágico” in 2006.
Don’t lose the opportunity to own a piece of one of the most beautiful lagoons in Mexico.
