The Freedom of Dual Citizenship

Dual Citizenship and Freedom

There has been a remarkable shift in perceptions of dual citizenship. For most of modern history, dual citizenship was considered an anomaly at best and an abomination at worst.  In recent years, however, it has come to be widely accepted.

Dual citizens or Dual nationality means that a person is a national of two countries, having legal rights and obligations in connection with both countries.  They are required to obey the laws of both countries, and either country has the right to enforce its laws. One of the biggest motivating factors for expats obtaining dual citizenship to leave their country is FREEDOM.

Freedom means different things to many people.  Freedom is understood as either having the ability to act or change without constraint or to possess the power and resources to fulfill one’s purposes unhindered.  Real freedom is when you can CHOSE to do what you think is right.

A Look at Three Types of Freedom.

These freedoms are not “left-wing” or “right-wing.”

The first kind of freedom is “freedom from” – A freedom from the constraints of society. Social constraints are the external controls on individual freedom maintained by the society.

Second, is “freedom to” – A freedom to do what we want to do. True personal freedom is to live as you are, to do what you want, and to spend time with people you like.   To develop and express a unique personality and life-story in both the public and private spheres.

Thirdly, there is “freedom to be” –  A freedom, not just to do what we want, but a freedom to be who we were meant to be. We are born into the society of our ancestors, with all its flaws. But we are not compelled to replicate it.

Today, we live in the most prosperous time in human history. Poverty, sicknesses, and ignorance are receding throughout the world, due in large part to the advance of economic freedom. In 2022, the principles of economic freedom that have fueled this monumental progress are once again measured in the Index of Economic Freedom.

Singapore’s economic freedom score is 84.4, making its economy the freest in the 2022 Index.

In the “Mostly Free” category, we find Canada, United Kingdom, and the United States.

  • Canada’s economic freedom score is 76.6, making its economy the 15th freest in the 2022 Index.
  • United Kingdom’s economic freedom score is 72.7, making its economy the 24th freest in the 2022 Index.
  • United States’ economic freedom score is 72.1, making its economy the 25th freest in the 2022 Index.

Don’t let yourself, be trapped in your own country.  You should be able to access freedom and opportunities abroad, creating a great future for your family.

Freedom, mobility and prosperity is a basic human right.

Additional Freedoms

In addition to enjoying the rights as a dual citizen in two countries such as the right to vote, access to benefits, and the freedom to live in each country, there are other benefits to maintaining dual nationality.

  1. Freedom to international travel
  2. Freedom to work
  3. Politics and Government jobs
  4. Freedom to own property
  5. Quality of Life and Education
  6. Easier Visa-Free Travel
  7. Family Sponsorship

There were once good reasons to limit multiple citizenship, which explains the historical disfavor attached to the status. Now that dual citizenship no longer threatens world order in any concrete way, an individual’s interest in retaining or acquiring the status should be vindicated as a human right.  The Supreme Court of the United States has stated that dual citizenship is a “status long recognized in the law” and that “a person may have and exercise rights of nationality in two countries and be subject to the responsibilities of both”.

Dual citizenship works best for individuals who have certain interests in both countries, such as business, culture, family, and so on/  For this reason, some eligible persons may be put off by the drawbacks of dual nationality.
