The Best Destinations for Solo Women Travelers

Sometimes you just want to set out and travel on your own…and why shouldn’t you? Any woman knows that we have to be careful when choosing a place to vacation alone. Sure, the same goes for everyone, but it doesn’t hurt to be extra cautious.

Solo travel doesn’t have to be as dangerous and complicated as you might think. It’s also great for character building and self-discovery, so don’t let fear of leaving your comfort zone hold you back. Every woman should experience traveling solo at least once. Keep travel safety in mind when planning your trip and check out some of these spots for a relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

Rome, Italy

Rome is famous for being a sprawling, cosmopolitan city full of classic art and architecture dating back thousands of years. As a female solo traveler, walking around this Italian city would be awe-inspiring, and allow you to live in the moment without hesitation. Visit the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, and the Coliseum and meet fellow travelers along the way. You can also visit the Vatican City and Saint Peter’s Basilica. Enjoy Rome to its fullest, even (especially) when traveling solo.

Barcelona, Spain

Spain has a lot to offer when it comes to safe and exciting cities. Barcelona itself is full of history, art (of course!), tapas, fashion, beaches…the list goes on! Barcelona is one of the safest cities in Europe altogether, and some of the hotels offer smart cars at your service for traveling around the city.  It also helps that Barcelona is walkable. Hotels prices are reasonable…there’s really nothing not to love about this city.

Tuscany, Italy

Another Italian city, and also a fan favorite, Tuscany has some of the world’s finest artwork in all of history. Head there to see Michelangelo’s statue of David, and the works of Botticelli. It is also one of the world’s best wine destinations, so be sure to hit the vineyards as well! Check out Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa and hop on a train to Serchio Valley to see ancient castles and villages, too.

Guanacaste, Costa Rica

Yes, there are even places to travel safely when alone in Latin America. Costa Rica is a beautiful country, famous for its biodiversity, which makes it a perfect place to go and explore. In Guanacaste, there is a beach resort about 20 minutes from the nearest airport that caters specifically to solo women travelers. The resort is called El Mangroove. Ask about their “Me, Myself and Mangroove” package to get the best solo traveling experience you can! It will include breakfast, spa treatments, paddleboarding, rainforest excursions and opportunities to meet other travelers. You’ll love it!

Edinburgh, Scotland

This city is great for staying when visiting Scotland because of its easy accessibility to all other parts of Scotland. You can take easy day trips by train to other areas that you might want to see, like Loch Ness and Glasgow. In Edinburgh itself, museums are free and the city has a medieval charm for which it’s famous. While there, be sure to stop into the pubs and try the local Scotch!

Melbourne, Australia

A bit of a long trip, no matter where you’re coming from, Australia is more than worth it. Melbourne is known for its live music, artistic culture, and culinary scene. It is also one of the best places to travel alone for women. It is full of large, beautiful gardens and parks, theaters, galleries, museums, shopping and Victorian architecture. This city is often thought of as the cultural capital of Australia, and for good reason! Melbourne is also a good location for visiting other famous parts of the country, like Phillip Island, The Great Ocean Road, and Grampians National Park.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Not only is Iceland known for being both beautiful and completely peaceful, it is also one of the safest countries in the world. Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland and the center of all of the country’s attractions. From there you can visit the Blue Lagoon and Northern Lights, as well as enjoy the laid-back, eclectic culture that Reykjavik itself has to offer.

Montreal, Canada

Either Montreal or Quebec City would be a great choice, actually. Canadian cities like this one offer up a chance to enjoy what would feel like a European vacation, but without the need to travel too far from home. You’ll find beautiful 17th century buildings, old cobblestone streets and French restaurants, and you’ll feel completely safe doing it!
